Allen Leroy Morrison was born near Batavia, IA on May 3, 1935 to Hollis and Martha Githens Morrison. He attended school in Eldon, graduating with the class of 1953. Immediately after graduation, Al entered the United States Marine Corps where he proudly served his country for ten years. His devotion and love for the Marines and his country would stay with him throughout his life. Upon his honorable discharge he came home to Eldon. He returned to a situation that forced him to step in as the head of the household for his mother and siblings. Allen willingly accepted this role as caretaker and looked after his family. He began working at Rockwell in Fairfield where he was a devoted employee for over 33 years. It happens at different times for everyone, but at the age of 42 Allen married the love of his life, Rose McGregor Umphress. The two had known each other through the school years but life had taken them in different directions only to have their paths cross again. They were married April 15, 1977 at the Agency Methodist Church and stayed by each others side for over 40 years. Al loved the Des Moines River and everything that came with it. He was an avid hunter, skilled trapper, and fisherman. As his health began to decline he found comfort with Rose and the river that had given him so many memories. Allen was a devoted husband, father, Marine, and Chicago Cubs fan. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ronald Morrison.
Left to share his story is his loving wife, Rose of Eldon, IA; five children, Randy (Jolene) Umphress of Elk Point, SD, Henry (Georgia) Umphress of Nashville, TN, Dan (Cheri) Umphress of Union, KY, David (Martha) Umphress of San Diego, CA, and Vern Garber of Agency, IA; two sisters, Charlene (Jack) Cowan and Mary (Dan) Pederson, as well as seven grandchildren, and many extended family and friends.
