Bob's Story

Robert O. (Bob) Hiatt, 87, of Moravia, IA passed away on February 20, 2018 at Monroe Care Center in Albia, IA.
He was born June 5, 1930 in Rockford, IL to Howard and Letha (Van Dorin) Hiatt. After the death of his mother, Robert was raised in Moravia by his grandparents, Charles and Elizabeth (Foster) Van Dorin. Robert married Betty Arlene Milburn in Moravia on January 9, 1949 and to this union, three children were born, Robert, Carol Joellen, and Patricia.
Bob worked various jobs, including at Success Barber & Beauty Supply, Art Fox Garage, as a City of Moravia employee, including night watchman, and at Merv Ellison Construction from 1954-1978. Upon Ellison's retirement, Bob and sons-in-law Skylyn Smith and Terry Rebol purchased the business and ran Hiatt Construction from 1978 until Bob's retirement in 1992. After retiring, Bob spent a lot of time fishing and operating bulldozers for other contractors.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing music for dances, Fall Festivals, local fund raisers, and any other occasion he was invited to join. He also enjoyed fishing at local ponds and spending time with family and friends. In the off-season for construction, Bob spent time with his brother, Lyle, in Florida and Nicaragua as First Mate and Captain, fishing for lobster in the Caribbean.
Robert is survived by two daughters, Carol Joellen (Skylyn) Smith and Patricia (Terry) Rebol, both of Moravia. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Bobby Smith, Georgia Smith, Ronda (Mike) Lamb, Maddy Rebol, Scott (Labekka) Hiatt, and Leslie (Dustin) Sample, thirteen great-grandchildren, and a brother, Donald (June) Hiatt of Ottumwa, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, siblings Lyle, Max, Betty, and Madeline, his wife Arlene, his son Robert (Robbie) Hiatt, and son-in-law Skylyn Smith.
As per his wishes, his body has been cremated. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, messages of condolence and memorials in his name may be directed to Joellen Smith, PO Box 206, Moravia IA 52571, with funds to be designated in the future.
