Boyd Herman Sodemann, 99, of Ottumwa, died at 12:13 p.m. January 16, 2017 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
He was born September 17, 1917 in Luverne, MN to Otto and Dorthea Herrmann Sodemann. He married Margaret M. Nielsen on November 15, 1936 in Parker, SD and she preceded him in death on November 2, 2004.
A graduate of Luverne High School in Luverne, MN, Boyd had been a resident of Ottumwa since 1939. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Navy.
He owned and operated Boyd's Electric and then was an Independent Insurance Agency having owned and operated Boyd's Prudential Insurance. He worked for Ottumwa Water Works and retired from Ottumwa Public Schools after 20 years in 1981.
He was a member of North Court Baptist Church and had served as a lay pastor at Ormanville Christian Church. Boyd had been a volunteer at the Iowa Regular Baptist Camp at Ventura, IA. Boyd was a member of the Wapello Chiefs Barbershop Chorus and sang with his son-in-law in the Ingenuities and Solid Sound Quartet.
Surviving is a son, Richard (Janet) Sodemann of Osage Beach, MO; 4 grandchildren, Krystal, Kenton, Richard and Brady; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Marlin (Fran) Woollums of Ottumwa and a niece, Lauri Cameron.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharyl Woollums and a brother, Lloyd Sodemann.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at North Court Baptist Church with Pastor Roger Hemmings officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials may be made to the Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Ventura, IA.
