Clayton Bonar Bell


Clayton Bonar Bell, 100, of Milton, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Keosauqua Health Care Center. He was born on December 23, 1918 in Milton, Iowa to Robert Clayton and Rhoda Elva Marshall Bell. Bonar graduated from Milton High School and married Janey Pauline Johnson on December 17, 1938 in Van Buren County. Bonar and Pauline raised two children, Beverly and Steven. She passed away as a result of a car accident on March 9, 1971. Bonar married Winifred Harward in the Fall of 1983 and she preceded him in death in 2002.

Bonar is a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II. He was a two-time Purple Heart recipient and had the opportunity to take the honor flight to Washington D.C. He owned and operated Bell Garage in Milton beginning in 1941 and continued to drive a wrecker until just a few years ago. Aside from his time spent in the Army, Bonar was a lifelong resident of Milton. He served as Mayor, City Councilman, Fire Chief, and neighborhood watch. He was a seventy-five-year member of the Russell-Strait Post #483 of the American Legion out of Milton, Iowa and a member of the Milton Christian Church

He is survived by a daughter, Beverly (Dennis) Parrish of Ottumwa, Iowa; a son, Steven (Betty) Bell of Ottumwa, Iowa; four grandchildren, Pamela (Kirk) Detweiler, Lon (Marysa) Mincks, Robin (Gary) Strausser, Anthony Bell (Jamie Osburn); 10 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Cory, Leah Renee, Leah Marie, Ethan, Brian, Noah, Kyla, Chloe, Charlie; 4 great-great-grandchildren, Esme, Lennox, Knox, Jett; a brother, Max Bell of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Pauline Bell and Winifred Bell; two brothers, Marshall Bell, Jay Bell; a sister, Geneva Bell; and a son-in-law, Laverne Mincks.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the Milton Christian Church in Milton, Iowa with Minister Kevin Mote officiating. Burial with military rites will follow the service at Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton, Iowa. Visitation will open at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2019 with family present to greet friends from 5 - 7:00 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home - Keosauqua. Memorial contributions in Bonar's honor may be made to the Milton Christian Church or the Heritage House in Milton. Online condolences may be directed to
