Dean Gerard Brain
A graduate of Farson High School in Farson, Iowa, Dean attended Iowa State University. He farmed with his parents in Farson and moved to Eastside Farm in Hedrick in 1947.
Dean served two years in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1953.
Dean and his brother, Carl, farmed in the Hedrick area and owned and operated the Hedrick Elevator for many years.
Dean was a member of the Hedrick School Board for 11 years. Dean and Jo Anne chaperoned many senior class trips during his tenure. Dean received his three degrees of Masonry in Garfield Lodge No. 485 at Hedrick. He served as Worshipful Master and held all lodge offices over several years. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 362 in Hedrick, Iowa and then Ollie Chapter 549.
Dean was a member of the Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the El Kahir Shrine at Hiawatha, Iowa.
Dean and Jo Anne enjoyed winters in Key Largo and Homestead, Florida. The couple traveled in their own RV until 2000. Dean enjoyed camping and fishing at Rathbun Lake, as well as in the Florida Keys. Dean and Jo Anne spent many happy trips cruising in the Caribbean with family members. He also spent many years attending the sporting events of his children and grandchildren.
He is a member of the Hedrick-Martinsburg United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jo Anne Brain; his daughter, Linda (Rick) Abel of Hedrick, Iowa; his son, Mike (Anne) Brain of Robins, Iowa; his son, Clark (Teresa) Brain of Hedrick, Iowa; his daughter, Teri (Greg) Summers of Buford, Georgia; his brother, Carl Brain, of Hedrick, Iowa; his brother, Henry (Clara) Brain of Fort Dodge, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Celia Winston; and two grandsons, Ryan and Robbie Abel.
Memorial donations in memory of Dean may be made to Hedrick-Martinsburg United Methodist Church or El Kahir Transportation Fund.
