Dean's Story

David Deane Sylvester, 88, of Hedrick, died at 8:12 a.m. October 30, 2017, at the home of his daughter in Washington, IA.
He was born May 29, 1929 to David M. and Alva Sauer Sylvester. He married Dora Jean Condon on January 14, 1951 and she preceded him in death January of 1974.
Dean grew up in Highland Center and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He owned and operated Dean's Garage for over 50 years.
He was inducted into the Knoxville Raceway Hall of Fame and Southern Iowa Speedway Hall of Fame. Dean was a life member of Arendt-Bowlin-Stubbs Post #83 American Legion and a member of O.B. Nelson Post#3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dean was a volunteer for the Hedrick Volunteer Fire Department for many years.
Surviving are his children, Larry D. (Sue) Sylvester of Blakesburg, Linda (Robert) Goodin of Bondurant, Letha Sylvester (Jim Hayes) of Washington, IA and Lyle (Kathy) Sylvester of Bondurant; 6 grandchildren, Dan Sylvester, Doug Sylvester, Matthew Goodin, Andrew Goodin, Kari Johnson and Robert Sylvester; 5 great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jaysin, Dominic, Taylor and Maya and a brother, Lloyd Sylvester of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by two grandsons, David Wayne Sylvester and Michael Dean Sylvester; twin brothers, Clair and Cleo Sylvester and an infant sister, Ella Louise.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Hornback officiating. Burial will be in McCormick Cemetery with military services conducted by Arendt-Bowlin-Stubbs Post #83 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
