Dick Sloan Louis Richard "Dick" Sloan, 94, of Ottumwa, died March 11, 2019 at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
Dick was born on August 12, 1924 in Ottumwa to Louis Walker and Nettie Mae Hicks Sloan. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1942 and was a member of Ottumwa's State championship basketball team that year.
He joined the U.S. Navy in December of 1942 and became a Naval aviator flying jets. He stayed in the Naval Air Reserve program for 23 years, retiring in 1968.
He married Janice Hobbs on February 8, 1945 and they were married for nearly 72 years before her death on January 26, 2018.
He had been a member of the First Christian Church and a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Dick was an Ottumwa fire fighter for 43 years, retiring as Assistant Chief in 1983. After retirement, he spent lots of time on the golf course, sailing his sailboat and watching Indian Hills basketball games.
He loved his family and will be dearly missed.
Dick is survived by a son, Rick (Leanne) Sloan of Ottumwa; a daughter, Kristy (Harold) Harden of Green Castle, MO; four grandchildren, Eric (Sandy) Sloan of Stratford, IA, Nicole (Jay) Stevens of Six Mile, SC, Dr. Wesley (Tanya) Harden of Rolla, MO and Dr. Matthew (Brittany) Harden of Kirksville, MO; seven grandchildren; a sister Sue (Curt) Sederburg of Ames and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Leila Disburg officiating. The Ottumwa Fire Department Honor Guard will provide honors. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Thursday with the family present one hour prior to the service Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ecumenical Lord's Cupboard or O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
