Donald Foster Courtney, 91, of 6 Weaver Dr. died at 3:55 p.m. February 17, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born June 19, 1925 near What Cheer, IA to Charles Elonso "Lon" and Amanda Estella Marr Courtney. He married Maxine Stanley on June 8, 1947.
A graduate of What Cheer High School in 1942, he received his Teaching Certificate from Iowa State Teachers College. He taught at a country school north of Fremont then worked for an aircraft manufacturer in Long Beach, CA. He returned to Iowa farming and working for Farm Bureau in Oskaloosa. He worked for a short time at the John Deere store in Oskaloosa. In 1956 he became co-owner of Courtney-Shepard Implement in Ottumwa. He owned the business for 40 years, retiring in 1996.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ottumwa Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M. and Rotary Club of Ottumwa where he was a Paul Harris Fellow.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine; a daughter, Laurie (Gary) Miller of Little Rock, AR; a sister-in-law, Ruth Stanley of Oskaloosa; a brother-in-law, Wayne Stanley of Texas and many nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
His body has been cremated.
A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jon Disburg officiating. Inurnment will be in Indianapolis Cemetery near What Cheer.
The family will be present at Reece Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m.
