Doris Mae Van Haaften Parrish, 86, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 9:35 p.m. November 19, 2017 at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny, where she resided.
She was born August 22, 1931 in Oskaloosa to Alfred and Alice Maffin Van Haaften. She married Errett L. "Porky" Parrish on June 19, 1949 in Ottumwa where they lived for 63 years. In 2012 they moved to Bondurant, living for the past 5 ½ years at Courtyard Estates Care Facility and later moved to Ankeny in May of 2017.
Doris was a 1949 graduate of Ottumwa High School. She had worked at Buretta Flower Shop and then for Bob's Flowers & Gifts. She had also worked for Tony's and south side McDonald's.
Doris enjoyed bowling, playing Bunco, making breakfast for her grandchildren, frying pancakes and dancing. Doris enjoyed life to the fullest prior to her dealing with Alzheimer's disease for the past 10 years.
Surviving is her husband, Errett "Porky"; her children, Jim (Dana) Parrish of Ottumwa, Chris (Harold) Calvert of Ankeny, Joseph (Cheryl) Parrish of Coralville and John (Allison) Parrish of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis DeFord.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Leila Disburg officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Friday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association-Greater Iowa Chapter or Unity Point Hospice.
