Douglas's Story

Douglas Keith Carl, Sr., 85, died Friday, June 16, at Galena-Stauss Nursing Home in Galena, Illinois. Doug was born February 12, 1932 in Harlan, Iowa to Valentine & Orimal (Woodhouse) Carl. While attending Harlan High School, he met the woman who would be the love of his life, Mary Louise Poole. The Korean War was being fought when he graduated, so Doug joined the U.S. Navy. He served 4 years. The Carls had 3 children: Pam, Doug, Jr. & Delight. Doug taught math in Denver, Colorado & Waterloo, Iowa public school systems & received a master's degree in education at University of Northern Iowa. Doug & Mary retired in 1994. They moved to Ottumwa to be near their daughter Pam & her family, joined Westminster Presbyterian Church & served as elder, Sunday school asst. & Bible study teacher. He is survived by son, Doug (Julie), & daughter, Delight (Jim), son-in-law, George, 5 grandchildren & 8 great-grandchildren. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Pam, & 3 siblings.
