Edward's Story

Edward Joseph Hollinrake, age 58, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born on October 8, 1959 in Albia to Joe and Jean (Durbala) Hollinrake.
Ed graduated from Albia High School in 1978. He then embarked on a colorful series of careers that included multiple terms as the Monroe County Sheriff, a long stint at Maytag, and briefer stints as semi-truck driver, security guard, garbage man, and Wal-Mart maintenance supervisor.
After literally meeting her while he crawled out of a sewer, Ed married Catherine Suszanne Houchins on April 30, 1983, and they had three children - Catherine, Caylene and Nicholas. Ed will be remembered by his family for his motto, "do as I say, not as I did," which made his stories funny and his efforts to encourage good behavior from his children even funnier.
Ed was known for his love of plaid and for wearing plaid shirts with plaid pajama pants, to clash as much as possible. He also loved awful spaghetti westerns, rowdy dogs, questionable Julia Child impressions, and bottom shelf bourbon. Ed was an avid Cubs fan and we're glad all those years of forcing his children to listen to Harry Carey finally paid off with a World Series win in his lifetime. Ed and his lifelong companion - his trademark mustache - will be laid to rest near the Weller baseball diamond. We hope someone mows the lawn out there more than he mowed his own.
Ed is survived by his wife and children; his parents; and one grandchild, Zella Jean Wilkins. He is also survived by his siblings Mary Kay (Rick) Henderson, Barbara Hollinrake, Steve (Kim) Hollinrake, Robert Hollinrake, Marty (Kristi) Hollinrake, Laura (Pat Finan) Hollinrake, and John (Cami) Hollinrake.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 26, 2018, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia, with Father Mike Volkmer C.PP.S officiating. Burial will follow services in St. Mary's Cemetery in Weller. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia, opening to the public at 1:00 p.m., with Ed's family present until 8:00 p.m. There will be a rosary conducted by St. Mary's Altar and Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Ed's family invites everyone to wear a flannel plaid shirt to help celebrate Ed's life. Memorials may be directed to the Weller Cemetery. Online condolences may be left for the family at sinnottfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Sinnott Funeral Homes.
