Florence Mona Leon Modrell, 102, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 12:55 a.m. June 30, 2017 at White Oak Estates in Oskaloosa.
She was born December 14, 1914 in Davis County, IA to Frank and Mayme Eakins Leon. She married Carl W. Modrell in 1936 and he preceded her in death in 1970.
Florence was a graduate of Bloomfield High School. She had worked for over 25 years at John Morrell & Co. before it closed in 1973, had also worked at Wapello Dairy and at Target.
She was a charter member of Bethany Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for 30 years. Florence was a member of the American Business Women's Association for over 20 years.
She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Florence was an avid gardener and enjoyed all living things. She was a positive soul that brought joy to everyone around her.
Surviving are her two sons, Regnar "Ray" Modrell of Oskaloosa and Roger (Marsha) Modrell of Flagstaff, AZ; 5 grandchildren, Michael (Kim) Modrell of Grain Valley, MO, Dana (Brian) Thompson of Cedar Park, TX, Angela (Shawn) Dawson of Oskaloosa, Ian (Rachel) Modrell and Casey (Mandy) Modrell of Flagstaff, AZ; 13 great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Betty Leon of Maquoketa.
She was preceded in death by a son, Carl W. Modrell Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Jean Modrell; 7 brothers, L.E. "Rufus", Charles "Jack", Max, Joe Dean and and Frank Van Leon Jr. and two infant brothers; and two sisters, Helen Howell and Marianna Frymoyer.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday with the family present one hour prior to the service.
