Floyd L. DeGraaf, 73, of Ottumwa, died at 9:17 p.m. September 10, 2017 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born February 9, 1944 in Sanborn, IA to John and Bertha VanDerWerd DeGraaf. He married Judith Kay Ogden on October 20, 1968.
A graduate of Sanborn High School in 1962, he served in the U.S. Navy as a SeaBee from December 5, 1962 until April of 1966.
Floyd worked for Graves Construction on the Rathbun Dam as a heavy equipment operator. He worked for Schmidtt Construction while living in Burlington. Moving to Ottumwa in 1976, he worked for John Deere Ottumwa Works as a welder, retiring in 2007.
He enjoyed hunting, welding, fixing fence, mowing and snow removal for his neighbors. Floyd could fix everything. He also enjoyed cutting wood, gardening and attending the Iowa State Fair and farm progress shows.
Surviving is his wife, Judy; a son, Brad (Stacy) DeGraaf of Flower Mound, TX; a daughter, Susan (Dan) Fransen of Somerset, WI; four grandchildren, Dalton and Grace DeGraaf, Torin and Alegra Fransen; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Jace Fransen; two brothers, Orville and Lloyd DeGraaf and a sister, Joyce Nelson.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jon Disburg officiating. Military service will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery near Unionville, IA.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
