Garfield "Gubby" Richard Gulbranson, 90, of Ottumwa, died at 6:45 a.m. on December 26, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born November 11, 1927 to Oscar and Hannah Gulbranson. He married Joyce Bergan on June 8, 1952 and she preceded him in death December 9, 2004.
He was raised in Gilbert, MN then moved to Tucson, AZ, Lakeland, MN and then resided in Ottumwa, IA since 1999.
He was a 1945 graduate of Eveleth High School. He was a member of the Iron Range Historical Society in Gilbert, MN; a member of Gilbert Snowmobile Club; a member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Gubby was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked as a policeman and fireman in Gilbert, MN. He retired from the railroad, Dupont, and as a State of Minnesota school bus driver. He is pictured in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, MN as part of the first hockey team to win the state title in 1945. He enjoyed gardening, music, sports and fixing things.
Surviving are two sons, Garfield "Gubby" (Valerie) Gulbranson Jr. of Vail, AZ and Douglas Gulbranson of Ottumwa; two daughters, Bonnie (Steve) Campbell of Agency and Kathleen Gulbranson of Ottumwa; 8 grandchildren, Danielle, Anthony, Kelcey, Colt, Caitlin, Casey, Sam and Jesse; 5 great-grandchildren, Annalyssa, Ariana, Xander, Skylar, and Calleigh; a special friend, Rosemary Bryant; two sisters Viola Erchul of Gilbert, MN; Mary Jane (Robert) Salo of Makinen, MN.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arvid and Dennis; his parents and a grandson Joshua Campbell.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Serving Davis & Wapello Counties.
