Gene L. Failyer, 86, of Oskaloosa died at 3:20 a.m. October 16, 2017 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He was born May 29, 1931 near Cedar, IA to Austin and Lucy Abernathy Failyer. He married Thelma Bird July 16, 1950 and she preceded him in death July 23, 2000. He married Mary Louise Harris on September 20, 2004 and she preceded him in death August 25, 2005.
A graduate of Fremont High School, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as parts manager for International Harvester in Ottumwa for 16 ½ years and at Hugen International in Oskaloosa for 8 years.
Surviving is a daughter, Melinda (Rodney) Reed of Lompoc, CA; a son, Ronald (LeeAnn) Failyer of Ottumwa; 4 grandsons, Austin (Jennifer) Norris, Adam (Amber) Norris, Spencer (Marisa) Reed and Nathan Reed; 4 great grandchildren, Landen Norris, Lincoln Norris, Ashten Norris and Audrey Norris.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Johnson, Rosemary Brown and Alice Failyer.
Graveside services and burial will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Westview Cemetery in Kirkville with Pastor Bob Voles officiating. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crystal Heights Care Center Activity Fund in Oskaloosa.
