Gilbert Eugene Jarvis, 99, of Ottumwa, Iowa passed away February 2, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society Ottumwa. He was born January 6, 1919 in Schuyler County, Missouri to Lem and Blanche Speer Jarvis.
Gilbert was a proud WWII Veteran, serving in the Army from 1941-1945. He received numerous medals including the Purple Heart while serving with the 34th Infantry Division, Red Bull Company.
After the Army, Gilbert operated heavy equipment on the Belknap Railroad gradings. His career included driving for Wilcoxson Transport, Roadway, Wright Tree Service, and being an independent over-the-road trucker. He retired in 1981.
Gilbert married Ivalee Lamb in 1945. They later divorced. In 1980, he married Lillian Proctor and they later divorced.
Gilbert is survived by two sons, Kerry (Marguerite) Jarvis of Dacono, Colorado, Kevin (Brenda) Jarvis of Ottumwa; son-in-law, Ronald Tipton of Keosauqua, Iowa; two step-sons, Ralph (Helen) See of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Roger See of West Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Bonnie Lou Bullock of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Loretta (Ted) Augspurger of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Jean (Don) Whisler of Pulaski, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sheryl Tipton; grandson Joshua Jarvis; step-children, Dale See, Ina Hubbs; and a sister, LaVeta Aeschliman.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with grandson Pastor Heath Jarvis officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday with the family present to greet friends until the time of the service. Military rites will be performed at the funeral home by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion following the funeral. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa. A memorial has been established to Good Samaritan Society Ottumwa.
