Helen Davis

Helen H. Davis, of 503 Fahrney Blvd., formerly of 826 Ellis Ave. died at 6:56 p.m. May 12, 2018 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
She was born November 23, 1926 in Ottumwa to Charles and Hazel Simmons Hird. She married Dow E. Davis January 31, 1948 at the Rectory of St. Patrick Church in Ottumwa. He preceded her in death October of 1993 after 45 years of marriage.
A 1944 graduate of Ottumwa High School, she also graduated from American Business College in 1945. She worked at John Morrell and Co., Target and Universal Rundell, from where she retired.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Ottumwa Regional Health Center Auxiliary.
Helen had a wonderful life. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, walking with her dog, Molly, helping family with anything needed and mushroom hunting with Dow. She and Dow always put their family first. In her later years she enjoyed traveling with her daughter and son-in-law; especially to San Francisco and Salt Lake City. She will be missed.
Surviving are her four children, Mike (Larissa) Davis of Indian Trail, NC, Andy Davis of Ottumwa, John (Patty) Davis of Junction City, KS and Kathy (Bill) Canaday of Ottumwa; five grandchildren, Bryan (Holly) Davis, Alyssa Sue Davis, Christopher (Ally) Davis, Chad (Cheryl) Canaday and ChereƩ Canaday; four great grandchildren, Kylee Canaday, Trey Canaday, McKenna Canaday and J.D. Hoover; numerous nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Zella Cocherell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Virgil and Richard Hird; her beloved dog, Molly and cat, Lucy.
Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. Cremation will follow the mass. Inurnment will be at a later date in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
Memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society or Seton Catholic School.
