Jan's Story

Carol Janet "Jan" Turner passed away peacefully at Hospice House in Ottumwa, Iowa on September 26, 2017 at the age of 82, after a courageous fight with cancer.
Jan was born on July 13, 1935 to Hermas and Eileen Swarts in Centerville, Iowa. She married Charles Turner on May 30, 1953. They later divorced.
Jan received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from University of Nebraska. She worked in the food service industry for many years. She retired from Econofoods as deli manager in 2004. Jan enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, playing cards, gardening, sewing, dancing and Canasta Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lowell Swarts and a son-in-law, Tom Hall.
Jan is survived by her brother, Don (Carol) Swarts of Moulton, Iowa and her best friend/dog, Bella, as well as her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren:
Denise Pauls and friend David Pauls of Eldon, Iowa and grandchildren, Alicia (Rob) Riley, great-grandchildren Caulin and Ella; Nathan (Dawn) Pauls, great-grandchildren Lana and Renna; Matt Pauls.
Sheryl (Garry) Eakins of Elkhart, Indiana and grandchildren, Traci Williams, great-grandchildren Blake and Elyse; Brandon (Carrie) Eakins, great-grandchildren Jacob and Emilee.
Donna Hall of Lansing, Michigan and grandchildren, Andrea (Aaron) Starmer, great-grandchildren Sydney and Evan; Dillon Hall, Brady (Lori) Hall, great-grandchildren Ian, Jesse and Cameron Schneider.
Mike (Susan) Turner of Bloomfield, Iowa and grandchildren Ryan Turner; Jake, Josh and Jed Martsching.
David (Joella) Turner of Ottumwa, Iowa and grandchildren Cole Payne (fiancé Felisha) and Melissa Payne, great-grandchildren Kendall and Jax.
Lori Turner of Ottumwa, Iowa.
Kris (Larry) Wolf of Mount Pleasant, Iowa and grandchildren Zach and Kelsey.
At Jan's request, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy and will be cremated. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at her son's home located at 5091 Lake Road, Ottumwa from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
