Jerold Hiatt Gillaspie

Jerold Gillaspie, age 85, of Albia, passed away Monday, October 30, 2017 at his home in rural Albia. Jerold was born January 4, 1932 on the family farm near Blakesburg to Russell and Bernice (Selby) Gillaspie. He grew up and attended country school around Blakesburg. He married Carol Jean Tubaugh on March 2, 1951 in Belle Plaine, IA. They were blessed with two children, Jerold Wayne and Mark Hiatt. They shared 60 years of marriage before Carols passing October 6, 2011. Jerold worked for John Morrells in Ottumwa for 21 years until they closed, then worked for Lumsden delivering coal before working for the Albia Community School District driving a school bus and helping with various jobs. Jerold also farmed for over 50 years in Albia out near Cottonwood Pits. Jerold attended the Open Bible Church in Pella and was a previous member of the World Wide Church of God. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, farming and working around the farm. Family was everything to Jerold. He enjoyed spending time with and being supportive of his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Jerold is survived by his two children, Jerold Wayne Gillaspie and Mark Hiatt (Cynthia) Gillaspie; six grandchildren, Matthew (Amy) Gillaspie, Justin Gillaspie, Amanda (Joshua) Hoelzel, Gary (Melanie) Gillaspie, Jason (Danielle) Gillaspie, and Derek (Jennifer) Gillaspie; 17 great grandchildren, Tyler Hollier, Michael Gillaspie, Alexis Gillaspie, Lizbeth Hoelzel, Timothy White, Gregary Gillaspie, Joselynn Gillaspie, Colton Gillaspie, Carolynn Gillaspie, Edynn Gillaspie, Samantha Gillaspie, Taylor Gillaspie, Brandon Gillaspie, Reilly Gillaspie, Keegan Gillaspie, Jack Gillaspie, and Sydney Gillaspie; two great great grandchildren, Adison Gillaspie and Neveah White; two brothers, Jim (Dorothy) Gillaspie and Jodie (Connie) Gillaspie and a sister, Judy (Tom) Barnes. Jerold is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; his parents, Russell and Bernice; a brother, Steven and his grandparents. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Tom Bartels officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2017 at the Tharp Funeral Home, with Jerold's family present from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00p.m. Condolences may be left for the family at www.tharpfh.com.
