Jerry Dwight
Jerald "Jerry" Byrdine Dwight, 76, of Ottumwa, devoted husband of 54 years and hero to his four sons, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 5, after a long and courageous battle with heart disease.
Jerry was born on May 16, 1943, in Exline, IA, to Byrdine and Doris (Cline) Dwight. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1961 and proudly served in the Unites States Navy from 1964-1968.
He married Jean Marie Kaller on June 21, 1965, in Ottumwa. Together they lovingly raised sons Jerry, Dana, David and Darren.
Jerry worked hard over his career first at John Morrell and then at Milwaukee, Soo Line and Canadian Pacific Railroads. Living nine years in Terre Haute, IN, he retired to Ottumwa in 2006 to spend more time with family and enjoy his hobbies.
Jerry loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his family. He also had a special interest in vintage cars and trucks.
He was preceded in death by his father, Byrdine, and mother, Doris; his father-in-law, LeRoy, and mother-in-law, Cleo; his brother-in-law, Lowell "Shorty"; and his grandchild, James.
He is survived by his wife Jean of Ottumwa, his son Jerry and his wife Lisa of West Des Moines, his son Dana and his wife Becky of Des Moines, his son David and his wife Debby of Ottumwa, and his son Darren and his wife Sara of Altoona; grandchildren Darika, Desmond, Lexy, Mason, Josh, Landon and Kaden; step-grandchildren Rebecca and Galanda (Frankie); and step-great-grandchildren Cynthia, Caden and Dylan. He is also survived by his sisters Judy (Ron) Amer of Bates City, MO, and Teresa (Jim) Hurley of Cedar Rapids, sister-in-law Debbie (Danny) Byrum of Kirksville, MO, brother-in-law Kevin (Diane) Kaller of Ottumwa; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Danny Cary officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military honors conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
In lieu of flowers, please kindly make a donation to EveryStep Kavanaugh House in Des Moines, who so compassionately cared for Jerry and gave him comfort and peace in his last days.
Jerry had a wonderful sense of humor, and he was a perfectionist through and through.
We will forever miss our generous, brave, self-less, loving Jerry, but we know he is no longer in pain and he will watch over all of us from above.

Jeannie and family. Words can not tell you how sorry I was to hear about Jerry. He was a special man who loved all of you. Jeannie, you were the love of his life as he was yours. You are a strong woman who will be there for your family. May you have peace knowing he is no longer in pain but will be watching down over all of you. God BlessπŸ™πŸ™πŸ™
