John F. Maines, 96, of 1030 S. Hancock, died at 8:07 p.m. September 18, 2017 at his home.
He was born April 9, 1921 near Drakesville, IA to Clay and Chloye Beatrice Cayton Maines. He married Helen Burton in 1949, they had one son and they later divorced. He married Bonnie M. Lesline on March 16, 1959.
John served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, serving with the 742nd Amphibious Tank Battalion during World War II. He was a golden glove boxer in the Army.
John worked on a turkey farm near Wellman, IA, chopped oats and wheat and worked for 13 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works. He worked as a rock hauler for a company straightening a river near Logan, IA in Harrison County. John moved to Arizona for 3 years where he hauled rock and then moved to Ottumwa in 1963, working in Rock Island. He worked for the Teamsters Union building roads, retiring in 1982.
John was a lifetime member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and a member of Teamsters Union Local #371. He was an avid Democrat and Teamsters Union supporter, and was an avid pheasant hunter.
Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Bonnie; two sons, John A. Maines of Ottumwa and David Maines of Blakesburg; four grandchildren, Joe (Jenna) Maines, Cole Maines, Chaz Flinn and Cody Flinn; and a great-grandson, Jayden.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis and Virgil Maines and a sister, Geneva Wilcox.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Chaplain Doug McAntire officiating. Burial will be in Breeding Cemetery near Drakesville with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Thursday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
