Joyce Andrews Joyce Audrey Andrews, 90, of Tampa, FL and formerly of Cedar, IA, died November 28, 2018 at Sun Coast Hospice in Palm Harbor, FL.
She was born April 20, 1928 in Cedar to Thad and Lola Gilyeart Picken. She married Harold Andrews October 19, 1947 at Cedar United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death September 9, 2004.
A graduate of Cedar High School in 1946, she worked in human resources for John Morrell and Co. for 23 years and was owner of Mahaska Hardware in Fremont, IA. She and her husband farmed together until their retirement in 1992. They moved from their home in Iowa to Florida permanently in 1996 when her husband was confined to a nursing home there.
Joyce was a member of Cedar United Methodist Church, past superintendent of Sunday school, UMYF sponsors for 12 years. She was a past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and served as Grand Page at Grand Chapter in 1956. She is a member of P.E.O. chapter EG of Dunedin Florida and Former member of Chapter IO of Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was a charter member of the 2 o'clock Club of Cedar. She was an avid Hawkeye sports fan, enjoyed golf and in her youth was a talented basketball player. After her husband passed away she began volunteering taking people to doctor's appointments, etc, and in 2005 she started volunteering in the Kindergarten classes at Westchase Elementary. She was affectionately known throughout the school as "Grandma Joyce" and was named volunteer of the year 3 years in a row.
Surviving is a son, Rick & (Debbie) Andrews of Council Bluffs, IA; a daughter, Nancy (Les) Young of Tampa, FL; a sister-in-law Frances Picken of Oskaloosa, 5 grandchildren, Jill (Patrick) McIlhon of Ankeny, IA, Stephanie (Mike) Sorum of Omaha, NE, Lori (Jared) Belgard of Pineville, Louisiana, Marissa Young of Iowa City, IA and Eric Young of Tampa, FL; and 6 great- grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald Picken.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Cedar United Methodist Church with Pastor Bob Voles officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation and a luncheon with the family will be held following the burial service back at the Cedar United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to: Cedar United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
