Kendel's Story

Charles Kendel Thompson, 93, Chief Master Sgt USAF (Ret), of Ottumwa, died at 1:15 a.m. February 14, 2018 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born December 2, 1924 in Floris, IA to Orrin H. and Minnie Huffman Thompson. He married Yvonne Penrod on January 29, 1950 and she preceded him in death on February 14, 1981. He married Genevieve Grimes Martin on January 2, 1982.
Kendel was a graduate of Eldon High School, Air Force Senior NCO Academy and two Navy and Air Force Avionics service schools.
Beginning in September 1942 (WWII) he served 21 years in the military, serving in the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army Air Corps and U.S. Air Force. Kendel retired from the U.S. Air Force on October 31, 1963.
He was a member of Willard St. United Methodist Church and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
Surviving is his wife, Genevieve; a daughter, Penny Brockelsby of Des Moines; two sons, Steve (Windy) Thompson of Fremont, NE and Ron (Janice) Thompson of Everly, IA; daughters-in-law, Gail Thompson of Olean, NY, Mary Thompson of Ottumwa and Dawn of Burleson, TX; step-son, Jeff (Kathy) Martin of Amarillo, TX; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Gary (Kay) Thompson of Ottumwa and Lavern (Betty) Thompson of Bloomfield; and a sister, Roberta Sigman of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Scotty Thompson and David Thompson; a granddaughter, Carrie Thompson; son-in-law, Richard Brockelsby; 3 brothers, Dennis, Elwood and Harold Thompson.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Travis Decker officiating. Burial will be in Floris Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Willard St. United Methodist Church or Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties.
