Kenny and Jean's Story
Kenneth "Kenny" Woten, 88, of Ottumwa, died peacefully August 18, 2017 in the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Jana and Ellery Sheets in Benicia, CA surrounded by his family.
L. Jean Woten, 83, of Ottumwa, died peacefully October 14, 2017 in the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Benicia, CA surrounded by family.
Kenny was born May 28, 1929 in Ottumwa to Charles Wesley and Ada Marie Garr Woten.
Jean was born August 5, 1934 in Ottumwa to Raymond Francis and Darlene Lavonn Stiles Herman.
Kenny and Jean were married on September 30, 1975. They lived in Ottumwa until 1977 when they moved to California and they returned to Ottumwa upon Kenny's retirement in 1992.
Kenny was a proud U.S. Navy veteran, serving his country from 1946 to 1954 as a Gunners Mate/2 aboard the USS Astoria and the USS Markab. After his service he worked for Mayflower, Iowa Van & Storage and in California for Pacific Motor Trucking.
He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars for over 50 years and a die-hard fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Jean was a 1952 graduate of Ottumwa High School and worked at Herman's Café, Robertson Electric and Iowa Van & Storage. While living in California she worked as an accountant from home and sold Avon.
She was a member of O.B. Nelson Unit #3 American Legion Auxiliary for 52 years. Jean was an avid reader and enjoyed making quilts for her grandchildren. She also made beautiful crafts which she shared with family and friends. Hawaii was her favorite place and she visited there many times.
Kenny is survived by children, Gregory Woten, Harold Woten, Zella Cocherell, Tina Woten, Toni Swope and step-daughters, Karen (Larry) Moore, Dana (Phil) Waldorf and Jana (Ellery) Sheets.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 7 siblings.
Jean is survived by daughters, Karen (Larry) Moore, Dana (Phil) Waldorf and Jana (Ellery) Sheets; 6 grandchildren, Todd Moore, Titus Moore, Cara Waldorf, Krista Waldorf and Ashley Lahage. and 4 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Kenneth "Kenny" Woten, her parents; a sister, Judy Jones and a brother, Raymond "Sonny" Herman.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, November 17, 2017 at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Moore officiating. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Kenny's name may be made to Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and memorials in Jean's name may be made to Heartland Humane Society.
