Larry Leonard Roberts, age 81, of Albia, passed away on Friday, January 5, 2018, at his home in Albia.
Larry was born on January 5, 1937 to Harry and Hazel (Peterson) Roberts in Newton, Iowa. He grew up and attended the Ottumwa High School. After school, he served his country in the United States Marine Corps. On November 14, 1981 he was united in marriage to Suzanne Harris in Albia. Larry was a baker for Hy-Vee and Dahl's grocery stores for 36 years before retiring in 2012. He was a Shriner and a member of the Ottumwa Masonic Lodge #16. Larry was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and was blessed to witness their 2016 World Series Championship. He enjoyed going to the casino, mowing the yard and watching any sporting event, especially his grandchildren's. Larry never knew a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. Larry is survived by his wife, Suzanne of Albia; 3 children, Mindy Stafford of Albia, Victor (Rosalyn) Roberts of Clive and Meagan (Erik) Vos of Albia; 8 grandchildren; Jeren, Jalen, Jenna, Kira, Hallie, Evan, Logan and Olivia; a sister, Eileen (Ben) Post of Ottumwa and a brother, Laris (Pam) Roberts of Worden, Montana. Larry is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Hazel Roberts, parents-in-law, Everette and Eleanor Harris and three sisters, Barbara Jean Dyer, Charlene Ellis and Carol Faye Percell. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia, with Pastor Roger Henry officiating and military rites provided by the American Legion of Albia, Lovilia and Melrose. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, January 8, 2018 at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Larry's family present to greet family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Welcome Home Soldier memorial in Albia or Hospice of Central Iowa (HCI). Condolences may be left for the family at www.tharpfh.com.
