Larry E. Rourke, 79, of Ottumwa died at 8:35 a.m. December 23, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born July 28, 1938 in Waterloo, IA to George and Nelda Foulk Rourke. He married Joan Meyer on May 29, 1960 in Rock Rapids, IA.
A graduate of West High School in Waterloo and of the University of Northern Iowa, Larry worked for 26 years for the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in 1998.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church and Woodcarvers and had been a member of B.P.O.Elks Lodge #347. Larry was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved telling his bigger than life outdoor adventure stories to friends, family and even strangers. He also loved to joke with everyone he met and was a constant source of entertainment for his grandkids and great grandkids, "Grandpa Larry" was a lot of fun.
He loved to sing, enjoyed playing with kids especially his grandkids and great grandkids, telling stories and teasing them too. He spent lots of time at their trailer at Lake Rathbun getting out in his boat fishing and relaxing. He loved to read and watch westerns on T.V.
Surviving is his wife, Joan; his children, Susan (Ken) Mahler of Ames and Steve (Linda) Rourke of Bartlett, IL; 7 grandchildren, Danielle (D.J.) Huffman, Ian Celania, Dr. Chris Celania, Emily Rourke, Nathan Rourke, Sarah Rourke, Michael Rourke; 2 great-granddaughters, Sophia and Hannah; and a sister, Carol Reed of Des Moines.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties.
