Leonard's Story

Leonard Harry Milligan, 88, of Ottumwa, died at 7:43 a.m. February 12, 2017 at Fonda Care Center in Fonda, IA.
He was born April 1, 1928 in Cameron, MO to Harry and Stella Milligan. He married Alice Victoria McDaniel November 2, 1964 and she preceded him in death on September 20, 1994. He married Gwendolyn Milligan on October 11, 1997 and she preceded him in death on November 21, 2012.
Leonard served with the U.S. Army for 7 months during WWII and then worked for the railroad. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952-54 during the Korean War. He later worked for Burlington Northern Railroad, starting in Cameron, MO and retiring in 1993. He lived in Avery and Albia before moving to Ottumwa in 1997.
He was a life member and Past Post Commander of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served on the firing squad for many years. He also was a member of Formal Masonic Lodge #442 A.F. & A.M. in Kirkville and then became a member of Eddyville Masonic Lodge #74 A.F. & A.M. and was also a Shriner.
Surviving is a son, Mark Milligan of Fremont; a daughter, Charlotte Raley of Albia; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a brother, Lloyd Milligan of Libertyville, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Chuck Milligan, Charlene Tamerius, Harry Milligan, and Johnnie Franklin; and three sisters; Lorena, Lydia, and Louise.
His body has been cremated.
