Lois Jeanne Larkin, 88, of Ottumwa died peacefully at 4:51 p.m. April 13, 2019 at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa where she had lived for a number of years.
Lois was born February 14, 1931 to William R. and Marguerite McFadden Moran. She married Joseph Charles Larkin on October 11, 1958 in Ottumwa. He preceded her in death on September 27, 1990.
Lois graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1949, where she was a member of the Shark Club, a synchronized swimming group. Her first job was as an usher at an Ottumwa movie theater, and she worked at John Morrell & Company while her husband was in college. During tax season, she would assist him at Anderson and Larkin CPA Firm.
Lois was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ottumwa for more than fifty years, and helped run bingo for many years. She was active at the Knights of Columbus, especially when her husband served as Grand Knight; she participated in the bowling league and served on the Ladies Auxiliary. She read constantly and loved to travel, often doing so with the Sunshine Club of South Ottumwa Savings Bank.
As a child and an adult, Lois often attended the Iowa State Fair, including to watch her son, Don, participate in the Unique Beard Contest. She proudly displayed his blue ribbons, some of which he dedicated to her.
Lois is survived by six sons, David A. (Ruth) Larkin of Lakeview, Florida, Douglas L. (Debbie) Larkin of Linn Creek, Missouri, Michael J. (Maria Quinn) Larkin of Ottumwa, James W. (Elaine Orr) Larkin of Springfield, Illinois, Donald P. (Kim) Larkin of Newton, Iowa, and John K. Larkin of Ottumwa; six grandchildren, Christopher A., Jeffrey S., Julie A. Powderly, James M., Joseph D., and Mychala J. Larkin; seven great- grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; her brother, William R. (Shirley) Moran, Jr. of Thousand Oaks, California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two infants, Joellen M. and Stephen G. and her sister, Marilyn (Don) Cassill.
Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Those who would like to make a donation in her name may do so to the Good Samaritan Society of Ottumwa, whose staff helped take good care of her for almost a decade.
