Mary Theresa McAnally, 96, of Ottumwa, died at 9:25 a.m. June 16, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
She was born March 3, 1921 in West Liberty to William and Johanna Geisen Kaalberg. On August 18, 1946 she married Gayford McAnally in Nichols, IA and he preceded her in death on October 25, 1987.
A graduate of West Liberty High School, she earned a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Drake University and a Masters from Northeastern Missouri State Teachers College in Kirksville, MO.
She taught at Hazeldale School near Muscatine, then taught at Munterville, at High Point School at Blakesburg, and retired in 1983 from teaching at Franklin and Wildwood Elementary schools in Ottumwa after a 34 year teaching career.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar & Rosary Society. She loved gardening and was a member of the Blakesburg Garden Club and a charter member of the Blakesburg Flower Club.
Surviving is a son, David (Carolyn) McAnally of LaVista, NE; two daughters, Sandra (Dennis) Swaim of Ottumwa and Lorrine (William) Draudt of Aurora, IL; 2 grandchildren, Trevor (Ann) Swaim and Heather McAnally (Andy Dibeka; 4 great-grandchildren, Cooper Swaim, , Allison, Brett and Kelsey Dibeka.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Nathan Swaim; 3 brothers, John, Leonard and Joseph Kaalberg; 3 sisters, Margaret Kinnan, Dorothy Wagner and Alydia Kaalberg.
Her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Hospitals Department of Anatomy.
Memorial Mass will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Patrick Hilgendorf presiding.
Friends are welcome to greet the family at a luncheon in the church basement following the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Patrick Catholic Church, Southeast Iowa Special Olympics or the Blakesburg Garden Club.
