Maxine's Story

Maxine Marie Chidester, 97, of Blakesburg, passed away Sunday afternoon, October 15, 2017 at her home.
She was born June 26, 1920 in Blakesburg to Carl H. and Gertrude B. Swasick Huber. She married D. Beryl Chidester on November 29, 1943 and he preceded her in death on April 1, 1968.
Maxine was valedictorian of the Blakesburg High School's class of 1937. She attended Albia Junior College, took many courses over the years, and graduated from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO with a B.S. E. degree in 1977.
She began teaching in rural schools in 1938. Her first assignment was at Fairview #2 (formerly Germany School) in Davis County. She also taught at Wellman and Prairie Schools in Wapello County. In the early 1960's, she began teaching in the Blakesburg School System as a substitute. In 1965, she started teaching full time in the sixth grade. In 1970, she began teaching first grade until her retirement, after 27 years, in 1984. Maxine taught several three-generation families and was a lifetime member of the National Education Association.
She was a member of the Blakesburg United Methodist Church for 89 years, United Methodist Women, serving several terms as president and 20 years as treasurer, and the American Legion Auxiliary for 70 years, serving as secretary for many years. During World War II she was a 4-H leader. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International since 1979, working on most committees and serving as vice-president and president. Other organizations include Iowa Retired School Personnel, Friends of the Blakesburg Public Library, Blakesburg Historical Preservation Society, AARP, Happy Hour Club, S & C Club and Monday Morning Bible Study.
Surviving are two sons, Gary of Blakesburg and John of Bowie, MD; two daughters, Linda (George) Uram of Bowie, MD and Kathy (Bruce) Epley of Waverly; 7 grandchildren, Kristin (Don) Greulich and Melanie Uram of Bowie, MD, Scott Uram of Severn, MD, Adam Epley of Enterprise, AL, Hannah (Josiah) Goering of Waukegan, IL, Samuel (Jessica) Epley of St. Paul, MN and Jacob Epley of Chicago, IL; two great-grandchildren, Theodore and Greta.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Richard W. Huber.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Ellis officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday with the family present from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.
Memorials may be made to Blakesburg United Methodist Church.
