Mel  Stokes


Melvin Parks Stokes Sr., 77, formerly of Ottumwa, died May 22, 2019 at Health Park Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, FL.
He was born September 1, 1941 in Waterloo, IA to Melvin C. and Bernice Dehart Stokes. Mel married Beverly S. Schanz on June 30, 1973.
Growing up in Cedar Falls, Mel served with the Iowa Army National Guard. He worked 25 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works, as a hand trucker and retiring as a spot welder in 2001.
Mel enjoyed attending NASCAR races and going to coffee with friends. He and his wife enjoyed spending winters in Florida.
Surviving are his wife, Beverly; 3 sons, Melvin (Rickie) Stokes Jr. of Osceola, Charles Stokes (Laura McKellar) and Scott Stokes (Stacy Jordan) both of Urbandale; 2 daughters; 3 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters and a brother.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Virginia Schanz.
A memorial visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday August 3, 2019 at the UAW Local #74 Hall, 205 N. James, Ottumwa.
Private inurnment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Heartland Humane Society.

Mel was a good guy. Always enjoyed talking & teasing him on his & Bevs walks around Vistanna. He'll surely be missed by many.
