Melvin L. Mathias, 72, of Chillicothe, died at 1:03 a.m. February 25, 2018 at the Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk.
He was born June 29, 1945 in Ottumwa to Elbert R. and Barbara Ann Rice Mathias. He married Connie Sue Worth on September 23, 1967 in Avery, IA.
A 1963 Albia High School graduate, Melvin attended Iowa Tech in 1971. He was a heavy equipment operator, had worked construction, and had worked at John Deere Ottumwa Works.
Melvin loved fishing, cars, hunting, traveling, camping, telling stories, visiting with friends, giving his grandchildren mower rides and collecting antique pocket watches.
Surviving is his wife, Connie; his children, Melinda "Mindy" Mathias (Jeffrey Moore) of Moravia and Mark Melvin (Lindsay) Mathias of Ottumwa; 4 grandchildren, Megan (Randy) Armstrong, Connor McDonough, Brittany (Andy) Johnson and Katie McDonough; 2 great-grandchildren, Tamsin Armstrong and Nick Johnson; a sister, Jana Sue Bower of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ronald L. Mathias.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery near Chillicothe.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to Kirkville Community Church or to the family.
