Merna's Story

Merna Laurel Probasco departed this life on September 26 2017 in the presence of family at the age of 96 years and 1 day. She was born on September 25 1921 in Appanoose County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Martha Heartley Stevens. She married David Clayton "Bill" Probasco on April 9, 1940. An only child, she filled her home with six children: David Roy, Jerry John, Mary Ellen, Steven Gale, Dennis Allen and Bruce Anthony.
Laurel attended James School in southern Appanoose County through 8th grade, then attended one year at Moulton High School. She lived her entire life in Wells Township. Laurel and Bill made their home together for 62 years and built a legacy of land and cattle. She was a farm wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. Granny, as she was lovingly known by most everyone, was famous for her good cooking especially pies and bread. You never left her house hungry or without a cup of coffee or a glass of sweet iced tea. In her later years, she enjoyed reading, embroidery and visiting with family and friends.
Laurel is survived by her children: Jerry and wife Frances Probasco, Steve and wife Pam Probasco, Mary and husband Paul Cook, Dennis Probasco, Bruce Probasco and special friend Lisa Yeatman; grandchildren Melanie (Probasco) and Eddie Guinn, John and Brenda Probasco, Jeff Probasco, Marci (Probasco) and Brad Nichols, Krystal (Probasco) Mosimann, Wendy (Probasco) and Scott Clark, Misty (Probasco) and Chris O'Hair, Haley Probasco and friend Gary Thomas, and David Probasco. Great grandchildren Zachary and Hannah Guinn, Kayci (Guinn) and Dakota Knowler, Kelsi (Guinn) and Adam Sankot, Zebulon and Tara Guinn, Kassi (Guinn) and Mark Mendick, Colton, Madison and Dalton Probasco, Bailey (Probasco) and Jesse Moorman, Noah, Malorie and Abbie Probasco, Garrett, Delaney and Natalie Nichols, Dane and Adyson Mosimann, Brandi (Clark) and Brad Kinkade, Mackenzie Clark, Toni (Clark) and Cody Ryan, Jaci Clark, Logan and Brooklyn O'Hair and Brenton and Sophie Thomas. Great-great grandchildren Elliott Guinn, Dakota Lee Knowler, Jr, EilaRose Guinn, Oakley Probasco, Riggin and Rylin Kinkade and Kori and Shay Ryan. In death, Laurel joins her parents, husband and one son David.
Services will be held at 2pm on Friday September 29, 2017 at Thomas Funeral Home in Moulton with family present at 1pm to greet family and friends. Interment will follow services at Hilltown Cemetery in rural Moulton. Memorials may be made to Garrett Memorial Library or Moulton EMS.
