Phillip Allen Smith, 68, of 914 W. Third St. died at 8:55 p.m. March 10, 2018 surrounded by his family at Ottumwa Regional Health Center.
He was born August 24, 1949 in Ottumwa to Robert Earl and Catherine Mae Fiorino Smith. Having attended Sacred Heart and St. Mary's Parochial Schools, he was a 1968 graduate of Walsh High School. He married Toni Suzanne Mooney April 11, 1969 at St. Patrick Church in Ottumwa.
Phil was a member of the Local IBEW for 17 ½ years before beginning his career in Law Enforcement with Wapello County in September of 1986. He served as a Dispatcher / Jailer and later as E-911 Coordinator before retiring in March of 2009. For the past 9 summers he enjoyed working at Adventureland Amusement Park as a Rides Operator, watching the guests (especially the kids) have fun. He and his wife, Toni, spent the winter months in Arizona.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, spending time with his friends and work family. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving is his wife, Toni of 48 years; two daughters, Susan Marie (Ben) Stivers and April Lynn (Mike) McCoy both of Ottumwa; five grandchildren, Joy Lee (Justin) Grouette, Christopher Stivers, Robert McCoy and Tina McCoy; two great grandsons, Zachary Lee and Thomas William Grouette; two sisters, Joy Kees of Sparks, MD and Vianney Smith of Siminole, FL; three brothers, Jack (Lisa) Smith of Wasilla, AK, Joe (Robin) Smith of Merlin, OR, and Rob (Debra) Smith of Lindby, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Jack and Edna Fiorino and Dora Case and Max Smith; a great grandson, Jesse Grouette.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home with Fr. Patrick Hilgendorf presiding. Cremation will follow the service.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans, to St. Patrick Church for masses, or to the donor's choice.
