He was born December 8, 1941 in Ottumwa to Ralph and Marie Shartzer Spurgeon. He married Sue McNeley on June 2, 1969.
A veteran of the U. S. Army, Philip had worked for JayQuest, Fawn Engineering and then worked at DICO for 20 years, retiring in 1991.
He was a CB/Ham radio operator and loved trains, collecting lots of train memorabilia. Philip also enjoyed playing XBOX games, latch hook, painting and coloring. He loved his cats, Tigger and Rowdy.
Surviving is his wife, Sue; children, Jeanne Richards of Ottumwa, Lori Shear of Houston, TX, Robert Scott Spurgeon of Fairfield, Trace Spurgeon of Birmingham, IA, Scott Spurgeon and Troy Spurgeon, both of Des Moines, Robby Spurgeon of Newton, Kim Spurgeon-Sparks of Knoxville; twenty-nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; eight foster daughters; a sister, Deb Spurgeon of Iowa City; two brothers, Steve Spurgeon of Temple, TX, Dave Spurgeon of Omaha, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Hailey Spurgeon.
His body has been cremated and services will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
