Phyllis Allman was born on April 3, 1927 in Agency, IA to Henry and Eva Garrett Lynch. She attended Eldon High School, graduating with the class of 1945. She was united in marriage to Donald Allman on June 18, 1947 in Ottumwa, IA. They were at each other's side for over 40 years until Don's passing in November of 1989. They achieved many things in their time together but none that made Phyllis prouder than being the parents to their nine children. Phyllis filled the role of mother and homemaker for many years before taking a job as a cook for the Eldon Elementary and Cardinal High School where she worked for 27 years until her retirement in August of 2000. Her care and love for others didn't end with her family. She cared deeply for the community that she had called home for so many years. She volunteered at the American Gothic House Center, was a member of GATE, and supported any fundraising events that would benefit the town. She donated not only her time but also supported organizations such as Disabled Veterans of America, St. Jude Children's Hospital, and Eldon Uptown/Downtown. Phyllis was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and loved attending and supporting her grandchildren in their sporting events. She was a woman who never let any grass grow under her feet. Having somewhere to go made her day, and she made sure to plan out exactly what to wear for each occasion. She had a personality that could take over a room but also a subtle presence that gave everyone comfort. She was a member of the greatest generation in more ways than one. She will be deeply missed by her family, the town of Eldon, and the many friends she met along the way.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald; one daughter, Peggy Miller; five sisters and two brothers; a great grandson, Jordan Johnson and two sons-in-law, Gary Dee and Tom Johnson.
Left to share her story are her six daughters, Cindy Johnson of Eldon, IA, Donna (Dennis) Jeffrey of Eldon, IA, Susan Dee of Eldon, IA, Diana Allman of Agency, IA, Sherri (Rob) Moore of Eldon, IA, and Terri (Greg) Greiner of Agency, IA; two sons, Tommy Allman of Agency, IA and Danny (Kathy) Allman of Eldon, IA; sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, as well as many extended family and friends.
