Renold "Rennie" Ray Thornton, 62, of Ottumwa died at 10:05 a.m. June 24, 2019 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born July 6, 1956 in Fairfield to Richard B. and Shirley Ann Gray Thornton.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1975, he was a clerk for North Hy-Vee and Wal-Mart and was a custodian for ABM.
He was a member of Four Square Evangelistic Church, former Past Master of Ottumwa Masonic Lodge #16 A.F. & A.M., former Past Worthy Patron of Rose Chapter #552 Order of the Eastern Star and former Past Royal Patron of Christina Court #3 Order of the Amaranth.
Rennie was an avid fisherman, loved family gatherings and enjoyed teaching his nephews and nieces card games and chess. He was a very well-liked man and he liked everyone.
Surviving is his mother, Shirley; a brother, Rusty (Lisa) Thornton of Hedrick; two sisters, Ricci Rush of Hazleton and Ronda Frye of Hedrick; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father; grandparents; nephew, Adam Long; and brother-in-law, Richard Rush.
His body has been cremated. A private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice serving Davis and Wapello Counties or the donor's choice, cards may be sent to Shirley Thornton P.O. Box 196 Hedrick, IA 52563.

Rennie was truly one of the nicest people on earth. Genuinely kind and thoughtful. I have many fond memories of him and his family. Prayers to you and may God grant you peace in the coming days.

To Shirley, Rusty,Ricci, and Ronda: Sending sympathy to all of you and remembering when my family (Dale, Cleo, my sister, Patricia, and I would come to your house on Main Street. Shirley would set my mom's hair in pin curls. We always had such a fun time at your house!
