Rev. Marion's Story
Rev. Marion Dwight McCoy, 89, formerly of Ottumwa, died September 26, 2017 at Israel Family Hospice in Ames.
He was born April 27, 1928 in Chariton, IA to Robert Fredrick and Flossie Mae Benson McCoy. He married Delphia M. Smith on March 20, 1948.
Marion was a 1946 graduate of Ottumwa High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He worked at John Morrell & Co. for 9 years when he felt God's call to the ministry.
He received his BA degree from Sioux Falls College, Sioux Falls, SD in 1963 and the MDiv. degree from North American Baptist Seminary. He served churches in South Dakota, Colorado and Iowa retiring in 1992. Following retirement he was called as part-time pastor of the Fremont Baptist Church, Fremont, IA where he served for 14 years. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Ottumwa.
Surviving is his wife, Delphia; a daughter, Janice (Lloyd) Nyhus of Huxley, IA; 3 grandchildren, Sheila (Thomas) Heinen and Angela (Rodney) Spaid both of Huxley and Jared (Vanessa) Nyhus of Prairie Village, KS; great-grandchildren, Tyler Nyhus-Nelson of Des Moines, Brant Spaid of Huxley, Garret and Cole Heinen of Huxley, Alexis and Abigail Nyhus of Prairie Village, KS; brother-in-law, Curtis (Eunice) Smith of Mukilteo, WA; sister-in-law, LaVonna Smith of Ottumwa and a half-sister, Lucille McNutt of Marion, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Evelyn Glassford.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastors Erick Swanson and Timothy Curtiss officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday. The family will be present for visitation one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
