Rex Stewart, 91, of rural Ottumwa, died at 9:13 a.m. October 11, 2017 at his home.
He was born June 10, 1926 in Baxter, IA to George Washington and Calverta Jay Stewart. He married Rose Mary Johnston on June 7, 1952 and she preceded him death on October 4, 2017.
Rex was a 1944 graduate of Lynnville High School. He was a World War II veteran having served with the U.S. Army as a tank gunner.
Rex was a farmer and enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, collecting arrowheads and artifacts.
He was a member of Christiansburg United Methodist Church where he had served as a youth leader and lay minister.
Surviving are his children, Mike Stewart of Ottumwa, Tim (Tammy) Stewart of Ottumwa, Mary Stewart of Salt Lake City, UT, Jon (Stephanie) Stewart of Cumming, Rebecca (Steve) Washler of Cedar Rapids; daughter-in-law, June Stewart of Ottumwa; 6 grandchildren, Angela (Mitch) Dotson, Ashley (David) Hunt, Amanda (Wes) Konrad, Sarah Washler, Molly Washler and Quintin Stewart; 3 great-grandchildren, Ella Madison and Mason; a brother, Robert Stewart of Marshalltown.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Samuel J. Stewart and Stevie Stewart; daughter-in-law, Kathy Stewart; a brother, Donald Stewart and a sister, Louella Ray.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Ellis officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Saturday with the family present one hour prior to the service.
