Robert Edward "Bob" Weirbach, 90, of Ottumwa died at 11:45 p.m. December 22, 2017 at Vista Woods Care Center.
He was born November 11, 1927 in Ottumwa to Edward Ray and Leora Given Weirbach. He married Dorothy Buffington September 27, 1947 and later divorced. He married Phyllis Terrell May 17, 2003.
Robert joined the Merchant Marines at age 16 during World War II, serving in the European Theatre from 1944 to 1946. He spent his 17th birthday in France.
He worked 36 years at John Deere Ottumwa Works, retiring as General Supervisor in 1983.
He was a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion in Ottumwa, transferring his membership to American Legion in Urbandale. He was also a member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #114 and was an Iowa Motorcycle Dirt Bike Champion 1948-49 and owner of Bob Weirbach Racing for many years.
Surviving is his wife, Phyllis; two sons, Michael (Betty) Weirbach of North Port, FL and Roger (Glenda) Weirbach of Ottumwa; a daughter, Deborah Clair of Colo, IA; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters, Norma Emerson and Jeannie Cocheran both of Fairfield and a brother, Richard Weirbach of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, George Edward, and a sister, Shirley Hahn.
His body has been cremated. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars, 702 W. Main St., Ottumwa, IA 52501 with Chaplain Doug McAntire officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice serving Davis and Wapello Counties or Heartland Humane Society.
