He was born April 19, 1947 in Ottumwa to William and Rose Mary Ryals Leach. He married Brenda Mahurin- Smith on May 29, 2000 and she preceded him death December 12, 2015.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School, Steve worked as a welder and was self-employed. He lived various places in the western United States, moving back to Ottumwa in 1988. He attended First Church of the Open Bible in Ottumwa. Steve enjoyed watching John Wayne movies and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons, Bill (Christina) Leach of Bloomfield and Rowdy Jay (Missy) Smallwood of Ottumwa; two daughters, Tammy (Ed) Brown of Ottumwa and Dixie Rupe of Arkansas; 8 grandchildren, Ashley Leach, Lisa (Ryan) Seamans, Stephanie (Matt) Stout, Jake (Nikki) McDowell, Cheyanne (Dennis) Lippincott, Brandon (Maddie) Pickney, Trent Fowler and Addison Rupe; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mohee Handley of Ottumwa and Mary Clark of Minnesota; along with many friends at Benchwarmers.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Elida Leach.
His body has been cremated. Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Hornback officiating.
Visitation will follow the service with the family present until 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
