Thomas R. Johnson died suddenly January 18, 2018 in Sioux Falls SD from an aneurism. In the early 1960s, a group of concerned parents recognized that their children with cognitive and physical disabilities needed service beyond their school years. They raised $18,000 with which to establish a program modeled after Goodwill Industries. Tom was hired as the founding executive director and served in that capacity for almost 20 years. After reaching his goal of securing a suitable building that would facilitate the program for years to come, Tom retired from Tenco. The program continues to operate in this building. Tom considered the establishment of Tenco God's call on his life.
Tom is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter Denise, and her husband David Hair and their son, Douglas Hair and his wife Amanda; his son, Bruce, and his wife, Stacey and their two sons: Thomas and his wife Sheena and their son, Jacob Thomas; and Samuel.
