Verna Yacko, age 105 of Albia, passed away peacefully under the care of Care Initiatives on Sunday, December 10, 2017, at Oakwood Specialty Center in Albia. Verna was born February 3, 1912, in Blakesburg, to Andrew and Anna (Yarkosky) Yacko. She attended country school in Blakesburg and later graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. She moved to Hollywood, California after high school and worked for MGM Film Studios for many years before moving back to Des Moines where she worked for Meredith Publishing. Verna was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.Verna is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Anna; two sisters, Helen Hazlett and Irene Yacko; and four brothers, Andrew, Peter, Albert and John Yacko. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 14, 2017, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia, with Fr. Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Albia. Visitation will open to the public at 3:00 p.m.., Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Verna's family present from 5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. A rosary will be led at 4:00 p.m., provided by St. Marys Altar and Rosary Society. Memorials may be made to St. Marys Catholic Church in Albia. Condolences may be left for the family at www.tharpfh.com.
