Vernon's Story

Vernon Wayne Schell, age 86, formerly of Ottumwa died Saturday, December 16, 2017.
He was born June 9, 1931 in Jefferson County (Iowa) to Raymond and Flora Humble Schell. Wayne married Evelyn Davis March 20, 1952.
Wayne is survived by a sister Shirley (Gary) Erickson of Altoona, Iowa, son Kevin (Deb) Schell of Ankeny, Iowa, daughter Carol (John) Parker of Altoona, Iowa, and son in law Neil (Sandy) Cass of St. Charles, Illinois. Seven grandchildren, Brian (Wendy) Cass, Sara Cass, Amy (Todd) Gernady, Emily Parker, Hannah Parker, Olivia Schell, Trenton Schell. Five great grandchildren, Taylor Cass, Ashley Cass, Alaina Cass, Madeline Gernady and Cole Gernady, and many nieces and nephews.
He was a graduate of Albia High School 1948 and served in the US Navy 1951-1955, on a destroyer during the Korean War. Wayne worked at Morrell Packing Plant 1948-1973. He was preceded in death by parents Raymond and Flora Humble Schell, infant son Robert Schell, wife Evelyn Davis Schell, daughter Kay Cass, and sister Bernice Brewer. Wayne enjoyed spending time with his family and had many hobbies, square dancing with wife Evelyn and friends, building old cars and street rods, hunting and fishing, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago Bears.
Memorial visitation will be held 5:00-7:00pm Friday, December 22, 2017 at Reece Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Disabled Veterans.
