William's Story

William Otto Kunzman, 89, of Marshalltown and formerly of rural Douds, Iowa passed away on March 6, 2018 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. He was born on March 25, 1928 to George Otto and Sofie Klein Kunzman in rural Douds, Iowa. He married Marilyn Maddy on April 24, 1955 and they became parents to three children; Susan L., David P. and Barbara Ann. They later divorced. He married Loretta Owens and they later divorced.

William served in the United States Army stationed in El Paso, Texas and was honorably discharged in August 1956. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ottumwa. William spent his career as a farmer and was passionate about farming. He spent several years as an active member of ACDI/VOCA, where he made more than 25 trips to third world countries including Africa, Russia and Czechoslovakia. As a volunteer, he used his experience and knowledge to teach modern farming methods and livestock production to the people of the communities that he visited. In addition, William spent 15 years as a real estate agent for Blasi Real Estate in Bloomfield. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by two daughters, Susan L. Kunzman of Ankeny, Iowa, Barbara Ann Marlow of Runnels, Iowa; a son, David P. (Connie) Kunzman of Ankeny, Iowa; four grandchildren, Mitcheal David Kunzman, Nicole Pauline Chapin, Samantha Marlow, Skyler Marlow; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Pedrick Funeral Home Douds with Pastor Phil Campbell officiating. Burial with military rites will follow the service in Leando Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday and will continue until the time of the service at Pedrick Funeral Home Douds. Memorial contributions in Williams honor may be directed to the Iowa Veterans Home Ulery #4 or the Alzheimers Association and can be left at the funeral home or mailed to Susan Kunzman, 409 NW Westwood St., Ankeny, IA 50023.
