Gordon F. Cooper, 92, of Lake Suzy, Florida, and formerly of Ottumwa and Centerville, passed away March 21, 2017.
Gordon was a native of Rhode Island and a WWII Navy pilot. He was with Iowa Southern Utilities for nearly 40 years, becoming senior vice president and director before his retirement in 1989. In addition to his involvement in numerous civic organizations, Gordon enjoyed flying several planes he owned after his Navy years and sailing several sailboats with friends and family. While living in Centerville, he was president of the Rathbun Lake Association and commodore at the Lake Rathbun yacht club.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marie, and infant son, Ronald. He is survived by sons Gordon Jr. (Pat) of Fairhope, Alabama, Gary (Julie) of Des Moines, Iowa, daughters Michelle (Scot Pralle) of Medina, Minnesota, and Denise Method (Victor) of Park City, Utah, a brother Roy (Judy), seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 3, at the First Lutheran Church in Ottumwa at with Pastor Mark Johnson officiating. Inurnment will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
