Irene R. Weinberg, 97, of Ottumwa, died at 2:51 p.m. May 1, 2017 at the Iowa Jewish Life Center in Des Moines.
She was born April 28, 1920 in Ottumwa to Sol and Edith Sigel Meyer. She married Stanley L. Weinberg on December 28, 1952 in New York and he preceded her in death on March 28, 2001.
Irene graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1937, from Ottumwa Heights College in 1939 and from the University of Iowa in 1941. She served her dietetic internship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. She had worked in Omaha, at Beth Israel Hospital in New York and at St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa for 17 years, retiring in 1987.
She had a deep love of history, and an encyclopedic knowledge of World War II. She was a wonderful cook and was known for her warmth and hospitality as well as her devotion to her family.
Irene was a member of B'nai Jacob Synagogue, B'nai B'rith, Hadassah, and American Dietetic Association. She had been a volunteer at the Wapello County Historical Society.
Surviving are her daughters, Ellen Weinberg of Moorhead, MN and Susan Weinberg and son-in-law Robert Armstrong of Coralville.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dave Meyer and Dr. Morton Meyer.
Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday May 4, 2017 at Ottumwa Jewish Cemetery with Rabbi Jeffrey Portman officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hadassah, Heartland Humane Society or donor's choice.
