Phyllis M. Hughes, age 86, of Eddyville, Iowa passed away peacefully surrounded by family Saturday evening, February 4, 2017, at the Serenity House of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Phyllis was born on May 13, 1930, in rural Eddyville, Iowa to William and Esther Hulda (Hornbeck) Foster. She was raised in Eddyville and graduated from Eddyville High School, Class of 1948. On April 3, 1948 Phyllis and William Hughes were united in marriage at St. Patrick Rectory in Ottumwa. To this union four sons were born, Howard, Paul, Jim and Phil.
Phyllis is proceeded in death by her parents William and Hulda (Hornbeck) Foster, infant sister; Lucille Foster, husband; Bill, son; Howard Eugene Hughes, and granddaughter; Amy (Hughes) Pettyjohn, brother; Keith Foster.
Phyllis worked at several stores in Eddyville while growing up. She worked for 23 years at Cargill as a janitor after retiring from farming.
Visitation for Phyllis will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel. Phyllis family will be greeting friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday evening.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at the First Christian Church of Eddyville with Rev. Dan Visser, Pastor Nick Hughes, and Rev. Paul Hughes officiating. Burial will follow services at Highland Cemetery of Eddyville.
Phyllis loved to cook, bake and decorate cakes, do embroidery work and help her family with whatever they were doing. She will be remembered for her smile and helping anyone she could.
Phyllis is survived by three sons; Paul (Pam) Hughes of Eddyville, Jim (Peggy) Hughes of Eddyville, and Phil (Valerie) Hughes of Lovilia, 14 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A memorial has been established in Phyllis name which the family will determine later.
