Shirley's Story

Text size

Shirley Dale Steele, 83, of rural Ottumwa, peacefully entered the gates of Heaven at 11:30 a.m. June 27, 2017 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.
He was born October 7, 1933 in Wapello County to Roy E. and Rubie McBurney Steele. He married Joanne E. Williams on June 26, 1955.
Shirley was a graduate of Fremont High School and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He had been a member of Fremont United Methodist Church. A member of B.P.O.Elks Lodge #347, he had served as Elks chaplain for many years. He was also a member of the Boot Scooters and a member of the Bowlers Hall of Fame at Champion Bowl.
Shirley worked hard, played hard and was active in bowling, dancing, and would drop everything to play a friendly game of cards with friends and family or give grandkids a tractor ride. His farming blood carried over into ongoing love of planting trees, flowers and a beautiful garden and sharing his produce with all. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and valued friend to all who knew him. His wife, family and friends were his world and he unselfishly put everyone else's needs before his own. He and his wife enjoyed going to the casinos. Shirley never knew a stranger, he was extremely personal and was very active until the last 6 weeks of his life.
Surviving is Joanne, his wife of 62 years; a daughter, Deb (Steve) Cullinan of Ottumwa; a son, Gary (Sandy) Steele of Ottumwa; 4 grandchildren, Jason (Kerry) Hibler, Joshua Steele (fiancée Kelly Hawkins), Daren (Holley) Steele and Kelsey Steele; 5 great-grandchildren, Gracie, Eli, Daniel, Hayden and Ruin; a sister, Velma Hutchison of Unionville, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Wendal Hutchison.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Reece Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the services. Inurnment will be in Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation begins at 1 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.
