Ottumwa, Iowa - It is with both sadness and celebration that we acknowledge the passing of Barbara Jean Cook who passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 19, 2026. She was born June 12, 1929, in Ottumwa, IA.
Barbara was more than just a beloved mother, sister, and grandmother. She was the heart and soul of her family, a loving, supportive, smart, and humble woman with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and an unwavering dedication to her loved ones. In the words of Helen Keller, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart." Barbara not only felt these things deeply, but spread this heartfelt beauty to all those around her.
Barbara graduated from Blakesburg High School, then continued on with her education, completing a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Simpson College. After graduation, Barbara accepted a position to lead both Choral and Instrumental music programs in the New Virginia K-12 school system.
Known for her passion for music, Barbara found her calling as a private piano teacher, touching countless lives with her talent and love for the art. She was the perfect duet partner to her late husband, Richard Cook. Together, they would travel and perform at different events and organizations; Richard serenading the crowd with his voice while Barbara accompanied him on the piano. Barbara's love for her community was palpable, leading her to actively participate in clubs and organizations, including the Blakesburg Historical Society, the Blakesburg United Methodist Church, AAUW, Questers, and PEO. Another interest of hers was history, particularly family history, and she enjoyed sharing her knowledge with others.
A health enthusiast and an avid reader, Barbara was always looking to expand her knowledge and maintain a healthy lifestyle. She loved riding her bike with friends in Storm Lake and walking around the neighborhood, engaging in fresh air and good company.
Barbara is survived by her sons; Jay Cook (Linda) and Jon Cook; sister, Janet Maas; grandchildren, David Cook and Amy Cook; nephew, Curt Maas; and niece, Lora Edwards. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Richard Cook, her parents Edward and Marjorie Fritz, and her brother-in-law Loren Maas.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 from 10-11 a.m., at Sinnott Funeral Home in Ottumwa. A funeral service will also be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Mel Kendall officiating. A luncheon will follow services at the funeral home with a private family interment in Blakesburg Cemetery to follow. Memorials may be directed to Blakesburg Methodist Church, PO Box 96, Blakesburg, Iowa 52536.
Despite the loss, her spirit lives on in those who had the honor of knowing her. Albert Einstein once said, "Our death is not an end if we can live on in our children and the younger generation. For they are us; our bodies are only wilted leaves on the tree of life." Barbara spent her life making the world a more beautiful place through her music and unwavering devotion to her family and community. Her legacy of love, support, and resilience will live on in the hearts and minds of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
